MEMBERS of Barry's RAF cadets have received praise from the Queen's representative in South Glamorgan, who described them as showing "the very best dedication and commitment" to their roles.

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant, Morfudd Meredith, was speaking at her annual awards ceremony where she singled out members of the Armed Forces community for their achievements over the last year.

Describing the cadets as an "inspirational organisation," Ms Meredith said they acted as "role models for other young people."

The Lord-Lieutenant’s certificate of meritorious service was presented to lieutenant Jenifer Green from Dyfed and Glamorgan Army Cadet Force (ACF), who has raised more than £13,000 for charity and led the development of young people.

It was also awarded to RAF Air Cadets’ flight sergeant Lisa Shires for her investment in future generations. Since volunteering with 372 (Barry) Squadron in 2013, she has helped teach cadets first aid skills, as well as raising money for the Royal British Legion and Bobath Children’s Charity.

Local duo Rhys Horton, 17, and Matthew Staite, 16, of Penarth Sea Cadet Corps, were also appointed to the prestigious role of Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2018. The pair will spend one year in the role, where they will join the Lord-Lieutenant on official engagements such as royal visits and remembrance services.

Flight Sergeant Natasha Gill was also presented with a certificate for serving as the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet in 2017.
