A BARRY actress is currently taking on one of the starring roles in The Sound of Music at Cardiff’s New Theatre.

Starring alongside Lucy Byrne as Maria and Neil McDermott as Captain Von Trapp is Barry’s own Megan Llewellyn Dorke.

The actress, who was with Welsh National Opera until 2015 plays the Mother Abbess, the inspirational leader for the nuns in the film.

“She’s the godfather of The Sound of Music, everyone looks to for advice and guidance,” she said. “The difference is she doesn’t put horses’ heads in beds.

“She has a particular fondness for Maria and I think she sees the likeness between herself and Maria when she was the same age. “It’s a great role because you get to sing three fantastic songs – and they’re some of the best known tunes in musical theatre: How do you Solve a Problem like Maria?, Favourite Things, and Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

She added: “I love singing them, which is good as I do seven performances as week, and I’m looking forward to be performing in front of home crowds again – they’re such appreciative audiences.”
