A FUNDRAISING and awareness walk for ovarian cancer will take place in Barry on Mother’s Day next month and all are invited to take part.

The walk organised by Alison Woolcock, sister of ovarian cancer sufferer Lesley Woolcock is being held in her memory and others afflicted by cancer.

Monies raised with go to Ovarian Cancer Action.

Mum and grandmother, Lesley Woolcock, also known as Lesley Brown, raised awareness for ovarian cancer and the importance of testing and early diagnosis while also raising thousands of pounds for supporting charities prior to her death, aged 47, in May 2016.

The former Vale of Glamorgan Council play development worker successfully fought to be given live-prolonging drug Avastin after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2014.

She was told she had a urine infection and sent away on two occasions with antibiotics, but by the time she was diagnosed ovarian cancer had taken over her body and she was at stage three.

Her sister Alison, 47, is supported by family and friends for the #WalkInhername event which will begin at Barry Cemetery before heading towards Lesley’s bench at Barry Island, and returning to the cemetery where candles can be lit in the Merthyr Dyfan chapel.

Ms Woolcock, 47, said: “Last year we did WalkInHerName for Ovarian Cancer Action in Cardiff Bay, but we want to do it in our own community of Barry. I know how Lesley would love that. She was never happier than when being among people.”

Ms Woolcock said the Facebook page had received a tremendous response with local women telling their cancer-related stories.

She said: “Having an early diagnosis makes such a difference on outcomes for people.

“If you’ve anything that’s going on that you’re not sure about get it checked out.

“Check your boobs, check your scrotum. That’s the thing that will make a difference.

“Age is no barrier. Ovarian cancer has one of the worst survival rates because diagnosis is so late.

To support the event you can order teal coloured T-shirts from Alison Woolcock, via Facebook.

The walk begins at Barry Cemetery at 12pm on Mother’s Day, Sunday, March 11.
