A NETWORK of live webcams will ensure Barry Island can be visited from anywhere in the world.

The service – BarryVision - aims to establish winter tourism and show off Barry Island’s all-year-round attractions.

BarryVision allows tourists to visit the South Wales resort to check out what’s occurrin’, what the weather is like, the beaches, or enjoy their own virtual trip to the seaside in a new community venture that has not cost the taxpayer a penny.

Barry-born weather forecaster, Derek Brockway said: “Barry has got something to offer all year round, come rain or shine. Barry people are known for their generosity and they are now, through BarryVision, sharing it with the whole wide world. The outlook is bright for Barrybados.”

Barry Island has become an all-year around destination thanks to the BBC TV hit Gavin & Stacey.

BarryVision grew from an idea posted on the Barry IdeasBank - a community project run by social enterprise Grow Social Capital that enabled anyone with an idea to share it and work with others to make it happen.

BarryVision has been created through a partnership of local businesses, organisations and individuals including O’Shea’s Fish & Chip cafe, Jason Aspinall of Chilled Photography, the National Coastwatch Centre at Nells Point, and Bro Radio with help from Little Birdies Studio.

The webcams are hosted at local community web sites - broradio.fm and osheasbarryisland.cafe

Mr O’Shea said: “We hope ‘BarryVision’ will connect with visitors and viewers from all around the world, so they can see what a great place Barry Island is - and find out what’s occurrin’.”

Vale AM Jane Hutt said BarryVision demonstrated what could be achieved by everyone in the community working in partnership together.

She said: “From one small idea we can now share Barry Island with the rest of the world.”
