THIS week the nostalgia section features a photograph taken in 1908 of Mrs Charlotte Medlin and her daughter Cissie in the back garden of her shop in Barry.

Mrs Medlin was born in Newquay, Cornwall.

After she was widowed in 1897 she moved to Barry with her daughters to run a second-hand clothes and furniture shop at 26 Holton Road.

Mrs Medlin advertised weekly in the small ads section of the Barry Dock News as she was always looking to “buy all kinds of cast off clothes”.

According to the 1911 census her daughters helped in the business.

Lottie, 21, worked in the shop and Nellie, 20, and Cissie, 15, both dressmakers, worked mending and altering clothes for sale.

It’s likely Cissie has local relatives who remember her as online records show she died in 1990 at the age of 95.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
