THIS week the nostalgia section features a photograph of the Barry Dock Office Christmas Party in 1954.

In the centre of the front row is the docks manager Mr Tom Carpenter.

This was his last Barry Dock Office Christmas Party as Mr Carpenter retired on New Years Eve 1954.

That's possibly why he looks so happy.

In an interview with Mr Tom Carpenter in the Barry Herald in December 1954, he reminisced about his connections to the town.

His father Mr W.B. Carpenter came to Barry in 1888 and was the first station manager of all the Barry Railway Stations between Barry and Cogan.

Tom started his career with Barry Railway in 1905 and after amalgamation with GWR in 1922 Tom worked his way up the ranks working in Cardiff and Port Talbot docks and finally returning as dock manager to Barry in 1946.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
