RHOOSE Lifeguards have been recognised by the UK Government as an outstanding lifeboat charity and will share a part of a £1million funding scheme.

The funding is designed to help boost search and rescue efforts, along with those of four other lifeboat charities who are set to receive financial backing.

The Rhoose club, who will receive £5,679, intend to spend the money on a new motor for their current lifeboat and other vital maritime equipment to compliment their training programme.

Club vice-captain, Simon Perry said: “Having this grant means we can replace our ageing equipment ensuring we can provide a more reliable voluntary lifeguard service to the community in Rhoose. It will also allow us to engage more young people into the sport and spread the message about first aid and safety at the seaside.”

Vale MP Alun Cairns said he was delighted that the club was set to receive such a substantial sum.

Mr Cairns said: “Rhoose Lifeguards carry out fantastic work in training lifesavers of all ages and it is always a pleasure to witness how engaged even their youngest members are in the maritime activities.

“It was clear to see how much enjoyment the club gives to its numerous ‘nippers’ and ‘juniors’. Rhoose Lifeguards is a thoroughly deserving recipient of this funding and I look forward to seeing how it will help them develop and grow as a club.”
