A HOUSING association which has more than 1,500 properties in the Vale Glamorgan has been shortlisted for two categories in the Inside Housing Development Awards.

The ceremony will be held at the Hurlingham Club in London on Thursday, November 23.

Newydd’s development and new business team, who build 150 affordable homes across the Vale, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Powys each year, has been shortlisted for Best Development Team.

One example of its work is the redevelopment of The Marine Hotel on Barry Island.

Regeneration projects in Barry, working with the Welsh Government and the Vale council, has also earned Newydd a place on the shortlist in the Best Partnership category.

Without the successful partnership between the three organisations in providing more than £1 million to revive the town centre, properties at two locations in Barry would have remained vacant.

The partnership has supported job creation and economic growth for the area, tackled poverty by providing further affordable homes and supported the aim of the Welsh Government to improve the vibrancy and vitality of town centres.

Other achievements for Newydd includes securing an additional £4.85 million of social housing grant from the Welsh Government during 2016/17 to build affordable homes, an increase of more than 700 per cent on what was expected.

Chief executive of Newydd, Paul Roberts, said: “Our staff are very ambitious and this is reflected not only in the quantity of work they deliver but in the quality too. Our tenants tell us again and again that they love their new homes and this is down to the hard work of the team in thinking creatively, using partnership working to its best effect and ensuring that properties are delivered to a high standard and on time.”
