A FORMER airman from Barry played his part in the opening of the Welsh National Fields of Remembrance at Cardiff Castle.

The Royal British Legion launched the site to pay tribute to all those who have served in the armed forces.

More than 10,000 crosses and tributes of other faiths have been planted in the castle grounds in what is one of six Fields of Remembrance across the UK this year.

The crosses are grouped by service and regiment with a section of crosses devoted to the RAF.

Each tribute carries a personal message to the fallen.

Terry McKeown is the chairman of the Barry branch of the Royal Air Force Association. He was one of the standard bearers at the ceremony. He said: "Being here today is about honouring the people who fought and died to give me freedom and the life I have today." It is the first time Terry had been to the Field of Remembrance and he added: "It is an honour."

Representing the RAF was Wing Commander Phil Sagar, OC of Number 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

The First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones AM attended the ceremony along with Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns MP, with both giving readings. They each planted their own tributes to those who have given their lives in service of their country.

The Military Wives Choir of the Defence Academy also performed at the event.
