THE annual Fireworks Fiesta will go ahead as planned this year following Barry Town Council (BTC) talks with the event organisers.

BTC will provide additional funding for the event which will be held on Saturday, November 4 – a change from the traditionally fixed November 5 date.

The have asked that a portion of money collected on the night goes towards the town mayor’s chosen charities.

The event faced an uncertain future after the Rotary Club of Barry claimed Vale council funding cuts made it “unviable” and Barry town councillors questioned the charity’s bid to secure extra help from them instead.

BTC already gives the Rotary Club of Barry £6,000 towards the fireworks, and Barry Island traders also contribute funds.

The Vale council said this year they will make a donation of £500 donation towards the event and provide around £3,000 worth of resources to cover such expenses such as traffic management, stewarding and event organisation, car park staffing, first aid provision and event promotion.

A BTC spokeswoman said: “Barry Town Council have agreed to provide additional funding to the Barry Rotary Club to ensure that the Fireworks Fiesta goes ahead as planned in 2017.”

Rotary Club of Barry president, Jill Osborne said: “Barry Rotary Club are grateful to the Barry Town Council for increased funding for the fireworks display this year on Barry Island.

“We will be happy, as asked, to donate a proportion of the bucket collection to the mayor’s chosen charities, which are good causes.”
