IT was a record-breaking year for A-levels at Bryn Hafren comprehensive school as 100 per cent of pupils succeeded in two or more subjects.

All Bryn Hafren sixth form pupils achieved the level 3 threshold of two A-levels at grades A* to E.

The number of pupils achieving the top A* and A grades increased by 3 per cent on last year.

School staff said they were very proud of the pupils’ achievements which reflected their hard work, commitment, resilience and determination to succeed.

Bryn Hafren learning manager of Year 12 and 13 Lisa Honeywell said she was pleased with the university places gained by the pupils.

She said: “More pupils have secured places at top universities this year studying a wide range of subjects including Maths, Accountancy, History, Architecture, Interior Design, English, Psychology, Physiotherapy, History of Art, Business, Biomedical Science and Nursing. We are especially pleased for Rosie Welsh who achieved 2A*, A and B and will be studying at the Royal College of Veterinary Medicine and Charlotte Rose who achieved A* and 3As to secure a place studying Medicine at Magdalen College, Oxford University.

Miss Welsh, 18, of Barry, said: “I had glandular fever over the time so it was hard work. I'm glad it paid off. I was knackered by the end of it – it was non-stop.”

Miss Rose, 18, of Barry, said: “It was so much hard work, but it paid off in the end. I was very nervous about getting my results. There was not a lot of sleep.”

Mum and dad Samantha and Richard Rose said they were very proud.

Mrs Rose said: “She’s worked really hard. She’s an A* pupil.”

Bryn Hafren head teacher, Tyrone Davies said: “I am very proud to be associated with this year’s students and was once again pleased that students from Barry could compete with students from all over the country.”
