TWO of Barry’s iconic buildings have gone on the market - - the Hood Road Goods Shed and Old Public Conveniences.

The Goods Shed site, in the Innovation Quarter, is near the Academy Espresso Bar - also on the market - and housed in the grade II-listed Pumphouse building alongside the award-winning Hang Fire Southern kitchen, and Snap Fitness gym.

The Vale council hopes an 'ambitious' developer will work with them to continue the regeneration in the area.

The shed, also known as the Gwalia Buildings, is a heritage railway building of traditional brick construction set under a pitched and slated roof.

It is approximately 592 sq m (6371 sq ft) together with a part two storey, part single storey office building of approximately 165 sq m (1778 sq ft).

The office building has two tenants.

The former goods shed, the upper floor of the office building and the land around the site is let to BRECO (Barry Railway Engineering Company (BRECO) Limited) for 10 years from May 3 2010 at a peppercorn rent.

The ground floor of the office building is let to Silver Star DIY on a yearly periodic tenancy at £1,700 per year.

The site is being offered to the market with the aim of securing a mixed use development.

Vale council, cabinet member for regeneration and planning Cllr Jonathan Bird said: "This project gives us the chance to regenerate another historic local building and provide a great boost to the local economy and we are looking forward to reviewing the submissions following the closing date next month."

The property is being marketed by JLL who are also responsible for marketing the Old Public Conveniences at Barry Island.

The grade II-listed building closed in 1995.

A Vale council spokesman said: “The council has spent more than £20k on maintaining the building in the last two years alone. It is currently being actively marketed.”

The site is being offered to the market with the aim of securing a redevelopment with a use or mix of uses that will complement Barry Island tourism and leisure..

Proposals that include some supporting elements of residential development will be considered if needed to make the scheme viable and deliverable.

Holiday rental accommodation would be preferable alongside any private apartments that may be proposed, the council said.
