COLLEAGUES at the Pets at Home store in Barry are celebrating raising over £1,000 to help homeless pets.

For four weeks, the team have been working to raise money for animal rescue centres in and around Barry as part of an initiative by independent charity, Support Adoption for Pets.

They were joined by local animal charity Safe Home for Unwanted Animals (SHUA) to help with the fundraising efforts, raising a total of £1,090.

Customers were invited to support the campaign by purchasing a ‘scratch and match’ card in store for £1, with the chance to win one of 200,000 prizes.

Pets at Home stores around the country rose to the challenge, raising a total of nearly £415,000 nationally. The total raised will now go towards pet rescue and welfare centres across the country.

Store manager Guy Massey described it as a "fantastic result."

"We had so much fun raising money and are so grateful to all of our generous customers for taking part and donating much needed funds," said Mr Massey.

"It’s great to know that this money will go towards helping these charities to keep abandoned pets healthy and happy until they find a permanent home."

Half of the money raised will be donated to pet rescues in Barry, while the remainder will go to the Support Adoption for Pets' grant funding programme, which allows charities to apply for additional funding to support their work.
