AN ANIMAL charity has launched a scheme inviting public service organisations across Wales to share their outstanding contributions to animal welfare.

RSPCA Cymru's initiative, which is backed by the Welsh Government, is designed to recognise local authorities, housing providers and others within the public sector achieving higher animal welfare standards – and is the only such scheme of its kind in Wales.

The community animal welfare footprints (CAWF) celebrate good practice, by providing recognition to those going above and beyond statutory requirements.

Categories recognise a commitment to animal welfare in four key service areas: stray dog services, contingency planning, housing policy and animal activity licensing - with bronze, silver and gold standards for each.

A further special recognition award will highlight those organisations who have consistently excelled using their own unique scheme to improve animal welfare.

Paul Smith, RSPCA Cymru’s Public Affairs Manager, said: "CAWF is a great way for public sector organisations to demonstrate their commitment to animal welfare, and to share unique approaches in making Wales a better place for animals to live.

"The footprints are the only awards scheme of their kind – and it’s fantastic for RSPCA Cymru to be able to recognise and reward the hard work that organisations do to improve animal welfare.

"RSPCA Cymru values its close working relationship with local authorities, the police, housing providers, and other public service bodies across Wales."

Entries close on 14 July 2017 and more details are available online.

Winners will be announced in September 2017.
