EMERGENCY services attended on Barry Island Pleasure Park on Friday (May 26) when 22 people were stranded for more than two hours after a ride broke down.

South Wales Fire & Rescue Service used an aerial ladder and line rescue equipment to take the thrill-seekers off the Snowstorm fairground ride after 7.26pm.

Specialist crews from Barry and Malpas stations attended the incident with those on the ride safely brought down.

Paramedics conducted precautionary check-ups.

No-one was injured.

Pleasure Park owner, Henry Danter said he believed the hot weather may have caused a hydraulic cylinder to stop, but he was happy the safety mechanism had kicked in on the ride.

He said the ride was closed and would be inspected.

If the problem was not identified by this Wednesday (May 31), the ride will leave the site.

Mr Danter, speaking to the Barry & District News, said: "Nobody was hurt. The safety procedure came into play. The computer did its job.

"I had a couple of people who missed their trains, but we paid for their taxis home. The ride will be closed until we find out what happened.

“Machines do break down. We were very unhappy that it happened, but happy that the safety mechanism worked. Things like this do happen.

"My passion is Barry Island and it didn’t feel good. The ride is meant to give people a thrill, but they were on it longer than expected.”
