THE third annual Barry & Vale Jazz & Blues festival saw seven musical events over the weekend draw crowds of music fans out to savour the sounds.

Music-lovers witnessed everything from boogie-woogie piano to jazz standards on vibraphone and a plethora of other instruments and styles in between.

Highlights included the impressive Jake Leg Jug Band, with the crowd raving long into the weekend about what a fabulous show it was with the feeling of being transported back to 1920’s America.

Venues hosting the musicians and welcoming appreciative audiences included Coffee Cove, Barry Island, Cadoxton’s Victoria Park and the Cwm Talwg pub.

The rain poured for the Jazz in the Park event, but the devout few made it and the band played on.

Festival organiser Gemma Collard, thanked the Soho Sopranos for their beautiful jazz sounds.

Sunday brought the sun, with Coffee Cove and Wine Bar as the venue providing the beautiful Barry Island backdrop for an afternoon with Fraccalvieri/Long Quintet - five of Cardiff’s finest musicians followed by the bluesy fun brought by the Plucking Fourstrings, a collective of musicians from Cardiff.

Barry-based artist Glyn Pooley, who has supported the festival over the years and enjoys drawing the musicians who play, joined in the event and organisers hope to include Mr Pooley and a ‘Learn to Draw’ Workshop in future events.

Organiser Ms Collard said: “We appreciate the continued support and encouragement.”

Barry & Vale Jazz & Blues is looking to find a commercial sponsor and partner for the festival to work with for the 2018 festival, scheduled for May 18 to 20, 2018.

The organisers ask that those who attended complete a short survey. A link can be requested from festvalejazz@yahoo.com
