THIS week the nostalgia section features Thompson Street, in Barry.
Thompson Street, which runs off Holton Road, was the most important road linking the town centre to Barry Docks.
Known to be the ‘red light’ district of Barry, welcoming sailors arriving from boats in the dock, the street also housed a number of impressive buildings.
Lloyds Bank, in particular, was one such building which was demolished and cleared in 1972.
Public houses were non-existent in the street, but the RAOB club, the Seamen’s Rest – later to be named the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, and the Coronation, made up for the deficit.
The Liberal Club remains to this day.
The street now hosts Newydd Housing Association homes, on the former Barry magistrates’ court site, some small independent businesses, Vale-based supermarket Filco, discount store Home Bargains, alongside The Thompson Street Estate.
