THE first candidates confirmed to be standing for the Vale of Glamorgan seat in the General Election next month have been announced.

Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru have made their choices ahead of the snap election called by Tory prime minister Theresa May last month.

Welsh Labour candidate Camilla Beaven said: “I’ve lived in the Vale of Glamorgan most of my life, growing up in Barry and Cowbridge. I work for Jane Hutt AM, fighting every day for vulnerable people, I know the issues which worry Vale residents very well.

“If elected I will stand up for the constituency which has shaped me and bring vitality and compassion to the role.

“My priorities will include ensuring fairness for the women who have suffered due to state pension changes and protecting police funding.

“The alarming rise in foodbanks here in the Vale is proof that austerity is hurting not working.

“Labour can offer a better, fairer Britain for everyone.”

Plaid Cymru candidate Ian Johnson, meanwhile, said: “My experience as a local councillor and working for a mental health charity means that I understand the real world impact of another Conservative government spending another five years cutting our public services.

“The Labour Party are now in complete chaos and cannot form a coherent opposition, never mind an effective government at any level – just look at the mess they’ve made here locally about the Barry Docks incinerator.

“Plaid Cymru will continue to fight the incinerator and stand up for the needs of Barry and the Vale, providing a strong voice for Wales in Brexit negotiations in order to protect investment and jobs.”

The Welsh Conservatives said they have selected Alun Cairns for re-election.

Mr Cairns was not available for further comment.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats said its Vale candidate had been selected, but would not be announced until today.

Candidates for the Green Party and UKIP also have have yet to be revealed.

The General Election will take place on Thursday June 8.
