A MAN who robbed more than £200 from a woman at a cashpoint has been jailed.

Jason Williams Jackson, 41, of Vere Street, Barry, pleaded guilty to robbery and a separate count of theft at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, March 27.

The court heard how, on February 23 the victim had gone to a cashpoint on Main Street to collect her benefit money.

As the money came out of the cashpoint the defendant reached around and tried to take the money from her.

There was a struggle as she tried to hold onto the money but Jackson took £260 leaving her with a graze and just £20 of her benefit money as he ran away.

Speaking about the victim, Gareth James for the prosecution told the court: "She is not in the best of health. She has Crohn's disease and Rheumatoid arthritis.

"Overnight between February 22 and February 23 she had not slept well and she was awake early because she knew her benefit was going to be paid.

"She left the house at 5.40am to go to the cashpoint she always used.

"She got there before 6pm and saw the defendant waiting outside the shop.

"She was not concerned as this was a safe cashpoint."

The court was then told that as the cash came out, Jackson reached behind her and took hold of the cash.

There was then a struggle between the two of them as the defendant attempted to pull the money away and she attempted to hold on.

She was left with a long graze and was in "some pain" but did not require hospital treatment.

Mr James read a statement from the victim saying that the incident had had an "enormous effect" on her and left her unable to pay for food and bills.

The court heard how Jackson said during interview that he could not remember the incident but accepts it was him captured on CCTV images.

He has previous convictions for burglary dwellings, drug offences and received a 22 month prison sentence in 2013 for an armed robbery.

The court was told how Jackson had became addicted to drugs since the breakdown of his relationship and was using a drug called Spice at the time of the incident.

Kevin Seal, defending, said: "He can give no explanation as to why he became involved. He has been remorseful and apologetic."

In sentencing, Recorder Simon Mills said: "You were waiting to go into the shop but I am not sure you were there to commit robbery.

"You came to the very clear conclusion and decided to steal from her as soon as you saw her. You had her hands and arms across her upper body and you must have known she was smaller than you.

"You left her worrying about using that cashpoint and she will always keep her eye over he shoulder when she uses it in future.

"You have a bad criminal record and a drug addiction. You need to wake up and stop using drugs."

He said the aggravating factors were the nature of the victim, the impact on the victim and that the offence was committed while it was dark and the weather was bad.

The second offence took place a day earlier on February 22, when Jackson stole around £30 of meat from Tesco Express store on Main Street.

Jackson was sentenced to three years in prison with two months concurrent for the theft.

He was ordered to pay the victim £340 in compensation.
