AN EXHIBITION celebrating International Women's Day is open in Art Central Gallery until the end of March.

The exhibition, by the Women's Art Association, includes more than 70 pieces of art work made up of paintings, textiles, photography, sculptural work and an art installation created by women from across Wales.

The open exhibition allows women at all levels of their creative careers to submit work for exhibition, enabling those less experienced to show work alongside more established artists.

This year the Vale of Glamorgan Council's gallery is also celebrating work by Eileen Allan, one of the early members of the women’s arts organisation.

She has worked in the arts throughout her life, as a painter and teacher of drama.

Ms Allan has been an advocate for upcoming artists and has supported Art Central Gallery in this, its 10th anniversary year.

Her work can also be seen at the Travellers Gallery and Cafe at Barry train station.

Bronwen Brooks, cabinet member for housing and social care and health, said: “We are delighted to host the Women’s Arts Association’s exhibition at Art Central in celebration of International Women’s Day.

"It is always an eclectic mix of work, illustrating the broad range of skills those who contribute possess.

"The exhibition provides the opportunity for these women to showcase their work publicly in our established and popular art gallery.”

The Women’s Arts Association first celebrated women and their art in 1987, at its first annual International Women’s Festival.
