OVER the years I have had the great privilege of taking numerous local people and community groups for tours of the Palace of Westminster.

Since 2014, I have organised sets of coach tours departing the Vale to London, to give as many of my constituents as possible the chance to visit.

My tours in 2016 sold out quickly, so I want to give Barry & District News readers advance notice and a chance to book a place on the upcoming tours in 2017.

These may be some of the last as a result of the potential for Parliament to be closed for years as repair work is undertaken.

The next tours departing Barry are on Friday, March 24 and Friday, May 19, I encourage you book soon to avoid disappointment.

Parliamentary democracy, accountable government and the rule of law are some of the most important developments in world history, and great British exports to the four corners of the globe.

The Palace of Westminster has been at the centre of this story for centuries, and has played host to some of the most important events in our island’s past.

The sense of history in the place is palpable and I want as many local people to have the opportunity to experience it as possible.

Once in central London, local residents will have the opportunity to see the 1,000-year-old Westminster Hall, the old debating chamber in St Stephen’s Chapel and the current chambers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Included on the tour is the Queen’s Robing Room, the Royal Gallery and the all-important voting lobbies.

After the tour I will hold a question and answer session in the Grand Committee Room just off Westminster Hall, and endeavour to answer any question I can about how Parliament works from the perspective of an MP and member of the Government.

I will also share some of my more amusing experiences on the green benches, centring on ‘how not to ask a question to the prime minister’.

If you live in Barry or the Vale please call 01446 403 814 or email alun.cairns.mp@parliament.uk to reserve your place. I hope to see you in Westminster very soon.

In addition to my coach tours, I am keen to help local schools and youth groups to visit Parliament.
