A HIGH Street-based charity has started a final push in its efforts to secure a new minibus for its service users.

ValePlus needs to find £800 to achieve the £25,000 cost of the vehicle which is used to transport adults with learning difficulties.

Staff, volunteers and service users have until the end of January to raise the cash before the cost of the vehicle increases by more than £3,000 next month.

ValePlus is an independent day service provider based in Barry and Llantwit Major offering a variety of courses suitable for differing levels of need.

The charity launched its appeal in 2015 after the charity noted the need to replace its then ten-year-old Ford Transit.

ValePlus director Steve Thomas said the minibus was used most days of the week, including weekends, for field-trips, coursework, and visits which helped it provide lifelong learning and leisure opportunities to all its members.

He said the minibus, although roadworthy, had had problems and required expensive repairs.

Mr Thomas said: “We can’t afford for the cost of the bus to go up by £3,000 or more and we haven’t got any fundraising booked in for January. We vitally need to raise £800.”

He added: “I don’t think the minibus will pass its MOT. It is 12 years old and it’s still got a cassette machine.”

Minibus appeal donations to date have included £5,000 from the True Colours Trust and £3,000 from Baily Thomas Charitable Fund.

The Barry Floral Society and Soroptimists and many individuals have also contributed to the cause.

ValePlus also runs Café No 5 and charity shop Nova, also on High Street, which provides work experience, training and workplace qualifications in catering and retail environments.

ValePlus’ Nova shop, on High Street, is also trying to boost funds and is welcoming clothes from all seasons, bags, books, bric-a-brac, DVDs and any items it can sell to help its clients and the minibus appeal.

Item donations can be taken to Nova during opening hours, from 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

The charity is planning to host a coffee morning to thank its contributors.
