A MOTHER who courageously donated an organ to save the life of her sick father is now urging people to become organ donors.

Sarah Lewis' father, Glyn Lewis, 58, had been suffering with kidney failure for a number of years, when she decided to donate a kidney this year.

Miss Williams, who was brought up in Rhoose but now lives in Barry, said she "never gave a transplant a second thought".

She said: "My four-year-old son, Freddie, was my main priority, but I thought if I could live a healthy life with no complications after the operation then why wouldn't I want to do this to save my dad's life.

"I also decided to donate as the whole family were all matches but I was deemed the best match."

The operation successfully took place at The University of Hospital Wales on June 7.

Mr Lewis, whose kidneys were working on 10 per cent, now has three kidneys but the transplanted kidney will "completely take over the old ones".

Following on from the "emotionally difficult" journey, the Admiral Car Insurance worker is now urging people to become donors.

She said: "There is minimal risk to the donor and you can save someone's life at the same time.

"To me, there's no question about this -seeing someone suffer and then have their quality of life back is such a sense of achievement.

"In a nutshell, if I had my time again would I choose to donate? Absolutely, without a doubt."

Miss Lewis, whose father has now made a full recovery, added: "Me and my dad now live a normal life but dad has to take tablets every day but that's hardly an inconvenience.

"We couldn't have done this without such a strong family, my mum who took care of us, my boyfriend who juggled work with looking after our little boy, and my sisters Helen and Rebecca."

Miss and Mr Lewis will appear on BBC Wales' programme The Greatest Gift on December 13 at 10.40pm to talk about their experiences of organ donations. The Greatest Gift series follows the impact of presumed consent on organ donation. It will also be available on iPlayer for 30 days after the broadcast.
