HUNDREDS of people turned up at Barry Island on the weekend dressed as Father Christmas and completed a fun run for charity.

About 300 people took part in a fun-filled two mile trek on Sunday, December 4.

Following a meeting between charity representatives earlier this year to discuss fundraising ideas, a Santa fun run was agreed and organised by Barry Town Council.

Councillor Charlotte Williams, Barry Town mayor, said: "There was a real 'Christmassy' atmosphere, thanks to Christmas classics played by the Barry Brass Band, Carols from the Barry Ladies Choir, Bro Radio Christmas tunes and mince pies kindly supplied by Marco's.

"Let’s not forget the Santas and the many little elves in tow - it was great to see so many people having fun.

"However, it wouldn't feel like Christmas if Santa and his sleigh were not there, so a big thank you to Barry Round Table for arranging Santa's presence."

Keith Jones, from Barry Island, described the day "as wonderful".

He said: "I was one of many Santas on the day and loved every second of it.

"Everyone was smiling and laughing on the fun day.

"It made me smile to see so much red all over the island."

Before the race commenced, a fancy dress competition for under-16s was held and Mark Lloyd, from Brawd Men's Health, rounded up the participants for a group warm-up.

The money raised will be donated to the Stroke Association, Downs Syndrome Association and Breast Cancer Now.

Cllr Williams added: "I would like to thank the charities involved, all the volunteers on the day and colleagues at Barry Town Council for organising the event.

"It was a great success and the start of something new for Barry Town Council, who will continue to organise this as an annual event in support of the Barry Town mayor’s charities."
