VALE residents are being called on to make the most of free help and support with energy bills.

With winter approaching, South Wales Central AM Andrew RT Davies met with British Gas engineer Ian Bishop to discuss the options available, including information on smart meters. These show exactly how much energy is being used in pounds and pence, which will bring an end to estimated bills and are fitted free of charge.

He also urged residents to check with their energy supplier if they were eligible for the Warm Home Discount, a government scheme that provides a one off £140 discount on electricity bills.

Most people qualify if their energy supplier is part of the scheme, their name is on the bill and they are getting a Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

Other methods of reducing bills include contacting your supplier to see if a lower tariff is available, as well as getting your gas appliances checked once every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Mr Davies said: “Many people fear the winter months because of the impact it can have on their gas and electricity bills, and it is important people know of all the options available to them.

“A smart meter is a great way to improve energy efficiency, and there are also many government schemes available to people to obtain help and assistance. There may be lower tariffs available, so I would of course advise people to shop around and make sure they are getting the best deal.

“I would like to thank British Gas for taking the time to discuss these options with me, and I would urge all Vale residents to take these small steps to help reduce their energy bills.”
