STAFF and pupils at a Barry school recently celebrated their annual European Day of Languages.

To promote the event, language ambassadors at Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School presented assemblies to pupils in the week prior to the celebration encouraging pupils to develop their language skills. Pupils learnt that a polyglot is someone who speaks multiple languages and that there are over 20 official languages in the European Union.

Staff and pupils in years 7 and 8 dressed up to represent a country of their choice.

There were also a series of events throughout the day with pupils being treated to food tasting with a vast array of European food from Parma Ham, Brioche and croissants to Brie and Camembert.

A spokeswoman for the school said this proved extremely popular with long queues.

Modern Foreign Language teachers held quizzes in their lessons.

Staff members around the school wore badges with words in different languages.

Pupils had to find them, correctly identify their country and the meaning of their badge.

Finally pupils were treated to a photo booth in the Learning Resource Centre.
