AN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE at a Barry care home has tapped into older peoples’ memories to inspire a limited edition book and sea-inspired wall display.

Residents at Golau Caredig, Hafod Care’s extra care scheme, in Barry, told local artist Heloise Godfrey-Talbot their tales for six months.

Mrs Godfrey-Talbot introduced herself by sending each one a unique hand-painted card of a memory which was precious to her.

This inspired residents to share their own stories which helped Mrs Godfrey-Talbot to produce individual paintings for each to keep and these have been used to create a book called ‘Treasures’.

Golau Caredig manager, Miles Utting said: “Heloise has really got to know our residents and the project has helped create friendships and strengthen the feeling of community. The book and art display have preserved the precious memories of our residents forever.”

Mrs Godfrey-Talbot said: “We have shared laughter and amazing stories. I heard tales of 10 foot waves, prize-winning tomatoes and falling in love. It was moving to include my daughter in the residency who was six months old when the project started. Many people at Golau Caredig have enjoyed spending time with her and she has sparked many reminiscences about their lives.

Resident Hilda Barnes, 84, took part in activities, she said: “I’ve enjoyed everything. I’ve made new friends, and am very proud that my art is a permanent part of this project.”

Vale Council cabinet member for regeneration and education, councillor Lis Burnett said: “We are committed to supporting regeneration, public realm work and to supporting older people in our communities. This has been a successful project and we hope to do more in the future.”

Vale Council arts development officer Tracey Harding added: “Working with Heloise has been a fantastic opportunity, her creative and sensitive approach has made each workshop enjoyable and has enabled the residents to get to know each other and tell fascinating stories whilst creating amazing artworks. There is so much older people have to offer society and often we undervalue their knowledge and experiences that we could share and learn from.” Liz Price of Chipper Designs assisted with the wall design and book.
