Barry Town Ladies 4 - Dafen Welfare at Jenner Park Stadium 1

ON SUNDAY, October 23, Barry Town United Ladies took on Carmarthenshire’s Dafen Welfare in Round 1 of the FAW Women’s Cup at Jenner Park Stadium.

Watched by a good crowd, Barry started the game on the front foot dominating possession in the opening stages but were often frustrated by a resolute Dafen defence. Elen Phillips and Tracy White all went close before the breakthrough came on 30 minutes from the penalty spot.

A corner from Georgia Peplow was allowed to bounce in the penalty area before striking the hand of a Dafen defender which resulted in the referee awarding a penalty. Captain Stevie Cook stepped up and kept her cool from 12 yards smashing home the penalty to put the Town 1 - 0 up.

A second goal followed 13 minutes later once again from the penalty spot with the influential Cook again stepping up to the mark to give Barry a 2 - 0 half-time lead.

The second half saw Barry increase the tempo and they played some excellent football playing out from defence and regularly looking to switch play utilising the full width of the Jenner Park surface.

A third goal came along early into the second half with an excellent strike from left winger Peplow which put the game really beyond any doubt with Barry continuing to control possession and the tempo of the game.

The fourth gaol came from substitute Abi Smyth after some excellent build up play which found her on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a low driven shot into the bottom left hand corner past the goalkeeper.

To their credit, Dafen showed a great attitude throughout and got a deserved consolation goal mid-way through the second half with a fine strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Barry saw out the final stages of the game to cap a good performance and progress into round two. The club would like to thank its junior players, supporters and mascots on the day making the match a great occasion for all involved.
