A GROUP of local boys are celebrating after being awarded the prestigious Prince's Trust certificate.

A team of 12 boys took part in the Prince's Trust initiative, which is a charity aimed at motivating and preparing young people for the future.

The programme, which lasted for 12 weeks, involved the team engaging in an activity week, employability workshops, two weeks' vocational experience and a community project.

Ewan Evans, 18, of Rheidol Drive, who is now hoping to complete a hospitality placement, said: "I am so happy with the certificate - which is signed by Prince Charles.

"I was on a previous course and someone advised me to go onto another course with the Prince's Trust.

"My problem was I couldn't find a job - but the trust believed in me and it was the best thing I ever did.

"I also really enjoyed the community project, where we cleaned a beach of all its rubbish."

Peter Bridge, 21, of Morel Street, Barry, who studied at Cross Keys College, participated in the programme because of his lack of confidence.

He said: "I joined the programme three months ago and did so because I came out of college and didn't have any experience or any confidence.

"But the trust managed to help me build my confidence and gave me the experience and time to change who I was.

"I would never have thought I'd have got this certificate but I have."

The Prince's Trust, founded by Prince Charles in 1976, is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and is reported to have helped hundreds of thousands of young people.

Mark Emery, of Belvedere Crescent, added that he "felt ready for the work place" following his time at the trust.

The 20-year-old said: "I feel ready for anything after doing this.

"I feel prepared for the next stages in my life."
