A FOOTBALL referee has been injured following an assault where he was rugby tackled to the ground by a spectator during a match.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 2.15pm on Saturday October 15, took place at Barry Athletic Club during a match between Barry Athletic FC and FC Pumas.

Ady Gratton, chairman of Barry Athletic FC, said: "The incident was completely bizarre People noticed two bystanders walk in and then next minute the ref was rugby tackled.

"Everyone was shocked at what happened.

"Then the one guy just stood there and later ran off with the other person.

"Everyone felt intimidated and were unsure of what to do."

The chairman added that he has since spoken to the referee and that "he's getting better despite being sore".

The match was subsequently abandoned.

A spokesman from the South Wales Police said that the matter is being investigated.
