A BARRY primary school has been recognised by the organisation working for children’s rights, survival, development and protection – the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef).

Cadoxton primary school has been awarded the level 1 rights respecting school award by Unicef UK, for making excellent progress toward embedding children’s rights in its ethos and curriculum.

At this level, Unicef UK examines the leadership and management of a school and how it incorporates the values of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC) into the school’s culture, policy and practice.

It examines teaching and learning in classrooms, whether pupils are encouraged to participate in decision-making processes and how the school helps pupils develop as global citizens.

Cadoxton primary has worked with Unicef UK since June 2015.

Cadoxton primary, head teacher Janet Hayward said: “We are really proud that the school has received the level 1 award from Unicef UK. Our school aims to be truly child centred. We have a thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels throughout our school.

"Our school motto is ‘Learning and growing together, being our best forever’ and was devised by our children. It is reflected in the convention through Article 29: ‘be the best you can be’.

“We are immensely proud of our children and work to firmly embed our culture of high expectations and a commitment to achieving academic success. Children are involved in all aspects of the school from being curriculum ambassadors, to being part of the teaching and learning working party.

"Learners are valued and respected as individuals, and their contributions are integral to the successful development of our school. This has led to positive relationships and behaviours throughout, as we are all on this global journey together.”
