VOLUNTEERS from Soroptimist International Barry and District collected 2.2kg of rubbish from Jacksons Bay beach on September 18, as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Beachwatch Big Week.

Every item collected is recorded so that the main sources of litter can be identified. As usual numerous small pieces of polystyrene were found, together with more than 50 cigarette filters and 22 crisp/sweet packets.

Although disappointing to still find so many non environmental friendly products on what, initially, appeared to be a pristine stretch of sand, they were pleased to note that the number of items surveyed is decreasing each year.

One of the main improvements is the amount of cotton wool bud sticks collected, at one time as many as a thousand but now less than 20.

This improvement is due to better screening at sewage disposal plants. MCS will use the survey results from this and the hundreds of other surveys that were carried out over the weekend, to tackle the sources of beach litter at national and international levels.
