MEMBERS of 5th Barry Guides, 2nd Cadoxton Guides and 1st Rhoose Guides visited Porthcawl in August for a week of Surf and Turf.

The 18 girls joined more than 60 Girlguiding Cymru members at Gowelion Guide Centre during August 22-26.

The Guides attended the Girlguiding Cymru Summer camp with their leaders where girls from across Wales spent the week camping out and discovering new sports.

There were water based activities including paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing. On turf the girls had the opportunity to try more sports including quad biking, tennis, golf, archery and football. When a break was needed from all the adrenaline there were nature and beach based activities.

Gabby Doyle, Girlguiding Cymru’s sports development officer, who organised the camp said: “As part of our ‘sport through guiding’ project, we have given the girls plenty of opportunities to try adventurous and exciting new sports at our summer sports camp. Both girls and leaders had a go at surfing, paddle boarding, gorge scrambling and more traditional sports throughout the week. The girls gained confidence and developed new skills as well as having lots of fun.”

Those attending were all members of Girlguiding, either Guides, aged 10-14, or the senior section, Girlguiding’s group for young women aged 14-25.

The event was supported by Sport Wales enabling Girlguiding Cymru to offer this opportunity at a subsidised price for the girls and young women taking part and covering costs for the volunteer leaders.
