SIX girls from 10th Barry Guides have been enjoying a fun filled week of sports as part a summer camp run by Girlguiding Cymru.

The Ready Steady Go summer camp was held from August 15 to 19 to celebrate the 2016 Olympic games. The girls spent the week at Broneirion near Llandinam, Powys, camping out, exploring and discovering new activities.

Nieve Lea, 10; Mollie Thomas, 10; Hannah Phillips, 11; Abi Leigh Whitfield, 11; Lauren Moran, 13 and Freya Burrow, 12; who are members of the 10th Barry Guides Unit attended the camp with their Guide leader Lisa Edwards along with her daughter Emilia Edwards who is a Rainbow.

The camp offered adventurous activities including sailing, golf, kayaking, archery, hockey, cycling, athletics and more.

Gabby Doyle, sports development officer, who organised the camp said: “To tie in with the Rio Olympics games, we have given the girls plenty of opportunities to try Olympic themed sports to develop new skills, gain confidence and hopefully inspire them to continue playing sport. All of the girls have had a busy and very rewarding week and who knows we may have a future athlete in the making.”

Young women attending Ready Steady Go camp are all members of Guides, aged 10 to 14, and the senior section, Girlguiding’s groups for young women aged 14 to 25.

The event was supported by Sport Wales enabling Girlguiding Cymru to offer this opportunity at a subsidised price for the girls taking part and covering the costs for the volunteer leaders.
