BARRY Town Council (BTC) has said it will consider providing funding to refurbish the town’s cenotaph following concerns about its condition.

The Barry & District News reported last week that the cenotaph had become the site of anti-social behaviour. Veterans had also noted that the condition of the monument itself had started to deteriorate.

Hall trustees will meet and discuss the cenotaph at their meeting on Monday, September 12.

Memo Arts Centre trustee, Paul Haley said the Memo Arts Centre trustees recognised what the area represented to the people of Barry and meetings had been held with Barry Town Council about funding the cleaning of the cenotaph and making improvements to the area’s landscape.

He said: “We recognise that works on the cenotaph would need early completion in time for Remembrance Sunday.

"The trustees believe that further landscaping would be a fitting project to coincide with the centenary of the end of the Great War in 2018."

Barry Town Council leader, councillor Emma Pritchard said: “This important focal point for the people of Barry has sustained weather damage over the years and it is now time to refurbish it to honour the people it stands to represent.

"The cenotaph and its upkeep is currently the responsibility of the Memorial Hall Theatre charitable trust, but I would like to explore the possibility of Barry Town Council providing the funding for such a project providing that a mutually acceptable agreement, on the future care of the cenotaph, can be reached with the Memo.”
