CALLS have been made for special litter posts to be installed on Barry Island Beach, encouraging people to keep the area clean.

Newgale beach in Pembrokeshire has recently seen a litter sign installed which has plastic bags and a litter picker attached to it. The sign encourages visitors to take part in a #2minutebeachclean using the items.

Rhian Lees, chairman of Pride in Barry, said she is fully behind the idea of in stalling a similar sign on Barry Island.

She said: "It's great to see Pembrokeshire leading the way in Wales with this idea, which originated in Cornwall.

"The cleaning department of the council do a fantastic job but it would be brilliant to try and encourage more collective responsibility and we'd love to see some 2minutebeach clean boards on Barry Island."

People visiting Barry Island also seemed keen on the idea when asked by the Barry & District News this week.

Kirsty Williams, 35, of Barry, argued that the need for the sign is ''inevitable''.

"I was one of the unfortunate people on the beach last month, when inconsiderate people dumped their rubbish on our precious beach.

"I've heard about this Pembroke sign and I really hope we can have the same here. People are still littering so I think having the sign is inevitable."

Chris Johnson, of Cadoxton, is also "heavily in favour" of the littering deterrent.

"I have family in Pembroke who told me about this litter pick initiative and I must say Barry Island desperately needs one.

"Not only is the sign incredibly large, which helps remind people to place rubbish in bins, but it also gives everyone the chance to do their own cleaning exercise."

Hoping to deter litterers, the Vale of Glamorgan Council announced last month that it had entered into an agreement with private contractor 3GS to issue £75 on-the-spot fines for littering.
