THE Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed to place a new bin on Friars Point, after complaints over "disgusting" amounts of dumped litter.

Resident Mike Dunn was walking his dog on its usual route on Wednesday last week when he discovered an "absolutely horrible" scene at the Barry Island headland.

General rubbish was strewn all over the area, he said, from full black bags, to plastic bottles and food wrappers.

"It was not a one off incident - it's been ongoing for a long time," said Mr Dunn, who works at Alzheimer's respite project, Ty Hapus.

"People just literally dump massive amounts of litter there.

"I was shocked at it. But I had been warned by a dog owner of the mess."

The incident prompted him to complain to the council, and - having forwarded pictures of the scene to the local authority - he received a reply outlining the council's aim to install a bin in the rubbish-stricken area.

David Knevett, operational manager at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: β€œIn response to a customer request, we are happy to be placing a new bin on Friars Point.

"The council had hoped not to put a bin in this area as it would not fit in with the environmental landscape and to encourage residents to take their litter home with them.

"However, due to recent problems with rubbish being left in the area a new bin will be installed in the coming weeks to ensure that the all users can enjoy the natural beauty of the area.”
