ON SATURDAY, July 16, the walking and countryside access charity, Valeways, celebrated its 20th birthday in style.

A large number of Valeways supporters, walkers, friends and volunteers attended a special birthday party held at The Forest Lodge, Porthkerry Country Park, Barry.

In addition, and in the true spirit of the charity, four walking groups started their walks from four different places in the Vale all arriving at The Lodge in time for the party.

On arrival, each group was greeted by Valeways’ new honorary president, Derek Brockway. Phil Gibbins, Valeways chairman said that the charity was delighted when Derek accepted the invitation to be president.

"Not only is Derek a familiar face on our television screens, but he has embraced walking and has inspired many with his television series ‘Weatherman Walking’. His involvement and support will certainly raise the profile of Valeways and we look forward to him accompanying us on future walks." said Phil.

Phil also added that it’s always a good idea to have someone who might be able to pull a few strings weather-wise as well.

In an impassioned speech Derek, a Barry boy talked about his love of walking throughout Wales but particularly round his local patch and was very appreciative of the work Valeways is doing to improve pathways, create interesting routes and encourage walking as a valuable exercise throughout the Vale. Wearing his newly acquired Valeways cap, he proceeded to cut the special birthday cake.
