50 YEARS ago

Extracts from the Barry & District News of July 22, 1966:

For two local couples today is a red-letter occasion for exactly 50 years ago both were married in the hardship which resulted from the First World War.

When the Court of the Welsh National Eisteddfod meets at 11am at Margam in Wednesday, August 3, it is confidently expected that it will be decided that the 1968 Eisteddfod will be held at Barry.

Another successful young stock show was held by the Barry and District Cage Bird Society at the Old Pioneers' Hall on Saturday and although entries were attracted from many of the Welsh clubs, Barry breeders succeeded in winning most of the major prizes.

The operatic section of Barry Arts Centre is holding auditions for its first production, the Arcadians, on Wednesday, July 27 in the Windsor Hotel.

Near perfect conditions for Barry Rowing Club's regatta, held in the Old Harbour on Saturday, spelt success for this annual event which attracted seven outside clubs from as far away as London, Hereford and Mumbles.

A tense and exciting game ensued when Barry Cymrics entertained the strong Wenvoe side in Saturday and eventually a fine catch gave the Barry side victory by three runs.

The five-a-side football competition, organised at the Barry Sports Centre, is now well under way, and there is likely to be an exciting tussle for final honours.

Barry Town have received confirmation that they meet Merthyr Tydfil in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on September 3 at Jenner Park. Provided they get through, Barry are also at home in the next two rounds.

Having won the toss when they entertained Barry Seconds on Saturday, Cowbridge Seconds took first knock but found runs hard to come by. In the first 12 overs they scored only seven runs.
