FRESH calls for traffic calming measures have been made in Barry’s Gibbonsdown after more than 130 speeding incidents were recorded in a mere 33 hours.

Since 2007 concerned residents have been saying the area has a speeding problem.

Further fuel was added to the fire at a PACT meeting recently when the shocking figures were of motorists caught by a police camera on St Bride's Way was revealed.

Their request for help comes ahead of the re-opening of the Splash pad at Pencoedtre Park on Saturday.

PACT chairwoman and Gibbonsdown resident board member Molly Conway, said: “The police have done everything they can. It’s now up to highways to take this up, but once again it’s about money and they are saying we’ve got to have a serious accident.

"We need traffic calming measures to slow people down. God forbid I see a young body lying in the middle of the road. That would haunt me for the rest of my life,” added the 73-year-old.

St Bride’s Way, the long main road through the estate, has underpasses leading to and from the play area to nearby homes.

But residents say excited children running to the park, senior citizens fearing for personal safety, and people with mobility issues refrain from using them

There have been no serious accidents on the road, they fear a serious injury or fatality could happen.

The building of the neighbouring Pencoedtre Village estate and the route in use for the former Ysgol Maes Dyfan housing development, have also seen traffic volumes increase, heightening fears.

Pendoylan Close resident and board member Jeanette Pappas added: “This is the largest council estate in the Vale of Glamorgan and there’s only one crossing. It’s a disgrace.”

The Vale Council believes the road’s safety is satisfactory though.

Vale council cabinet member for building services, highways and transportation, councillor Peter King also said the authority had “not received any recent complaints about vehicle speeds on this section of road”.

“A comprehensive vehicle speed survey was carried out a number of years ago in response to local concerns. However, St. Bride’s Way generally has a very good safety record," he added. Only three minor accidents have been recorded in the past five years. None of which were speed related.

“The four underpasses represent the safest way for local residents to cross St Brides Road. While we have also received no complaints about the safety of these we shall investigate whether any improvements could be made.”
