AT BRYN Hafren Comprehensive School, 19 Year 8 pupils were given the wonderful opportunity to become BBC reporters for the day.

On Thursday, March 10, they spent the day writing articles and filming reports on the latest news as part of the BBC School Report.

A pupil in the class said, “I think it was a great opportunity because it gave us pupils a chance to see what it’s like behind the camera.”

This experience will be very helpful for the pupils next year when they decide what subjects they will take for GCSEs.

The girls took over the school’s library for a day to film various news reports which have been published to the BBC website and may even appear on screen. This is a great idea and all the resources for the day were provided free of charge to the school.

Another pupil in the class stated, “I loved doing all the planning for the day; we got to do a full-scale run through of the interviews so we could get the feel of being a reporter.’’

The head of Year 8, Mrs Dix, told our reporter, “It helps the girls develop new skills and helps with their oracy skills as well. Also it raises the profile of our school and helps us link with other schools.”

The whole of the Year 8 class were very excited and really enjoyed filming. The reports have been published on the BBC School Re-port website, check them out at bbc.co.uk/

Year 12 and 13 Music students were invited to spend a day at Cardiff Metropolitan University recently as part of the BTEC level 3 Music course.

Pupils were required to experience and perform different music from around the world, which included Steel Pan music from the Caribbean and Samba Percussion Music from Brazil.

The workshops are offered as a result of the excellent teacher training partnership Bryn Hafren has with the university. The pupils enjoyed the day so much they have requested a set of Steel Pans in the Music Department.

The students were a credit to the school and also did very well in their assessments.
