CHILDREN and young adults in the Vale are being encouraged to get vaccinated against meningitis and HPV in May.

An open clinic has been set up for those who missed the vaccine at their school or GP surgery.

Teenage boys and girls born between September 1, 1999 and August 31, 2000 are advised to have the new MenACWY vaccine to protect them against potentially deadly meningitis.

Girls born between September 1, 1997 and August 31, 2003 should get the HPV - human papilloma virus - vaccine which prevents cervical cancer.

Immunisation co-ordinator for the Cardiff and Vale public health team, Nuala Mahon said: “We know some young people have missed these important vaccines. The vaccines are free and safe and can protect against preventable – and sometimes fatal - illnesses.

“We encourage young people and their parents to think about whether they have missed either of these vaccines and, if they have, to come along and get protected. It’s not too late.”

The pop-up sessions at the Mary Lennox room, Barry Hospital, run from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, May 4.
