TRADITIONAL food was on the menu on Shrove Tuesday as some Barry schools indulged in some sweet and savoury pancakes

Palmerston, Barry Island, and Jenner Park primaries were just a few of the schools whose pupils sought to follow Mary Berry’s cookery lead.

The edible activity enabled the youngsters to have a fun-filled practical lesson which will serve them for years to come.

Barry Island primary class teacher, Donna Evans said: “The year 2 class at Barry Island Primary School have been learning about the history of pancake day and how it leads on to Lent and fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. In true tradition over the years they emptied the cupboards and made pancakes. Each child in the class learnt about how to make a pancake and the importance of whisking it to make more air. They all had hands on experience at trying o fry their pancake and finally fill it. They chose healthy fillings for the inside with a little treat of syrup to go on top. A practical, fun learning experience was had by all.”
