PLANS to redevelop the Beachcomber site at The Knap have hit opposition from Barry Town Council.

An application to demolish The Beachcomber, a well known two-storey landmark in the Barry Marine Conservation area, and build eight two-bedroom flats in a new three or four storey building went before Barry Town Council last week where the planning committee unanimously voted to object to the plans.

ahead of a Vale council planning meeting next month.

The plans are an amended version of the same ones which were objected to in November 2015.

Since then the planners, Jeff White Motors Limited, have been in discussions with the Local Planning Authority about making amendments which overcome the concerns regarding the developments impact on the surrounding area.

Plaid Cymru councillor Shirley Hodges, who represents the Knap as part of the Baruc ward, said: “This is a well-known location on the Knap and within the Barry Marine Conservation Area, fronting out onto Lakeside and Watchtower Bay.

“Any proposals for change here must be considerate to the nature of the area and the style of housing.

“The proposals are an over-development of a fairly small site to fit eight flats upon them and increase the height of the building. This would have a negative impact upon the bungalow next door.

“We have therefore objected to the plans as they are not in keeping with the spirit of the area.

“I would like to thank local residents for attending the Town Council meeting to give their views on the plans. It was very helpful.”

Plaid Cymru councillor Ian Johnson, who also sits on the Barry Town Council Planning Committee, added: “We need to be sure that any developments are in keeping with the character of the Knap, and I am concerned that these plans are not.”

The final decision on the proposals will be made by the Vale of Glamorgan Planning Committee next month.
