A BARRY grandmother whose grandson became Britain’s youngest ever organ donor, has scooped the top prize in a charity lottery.

Debra Carr, who is a long-time supporter of children's hospice Ty Hafan, won the charity’s Crackerjackpot lottery top prize of £2,000.

Mrs Carr’s brother died when they were both teenagers and she said the experience gave her a genuine understanding of the need for a children’s hospice, inspiring her to help as much as possible.

Her connection with the hospice became more personal when her grandson Teddy died last year.

Teddy, who has a memorial stone at Ty Hafan, made national news when he became Britain’s youngest ever organ donor.

Mrs Carr's daughter, Jess Evans, and her partner, learned that Teddy's life would be very short while she was pregnant. Despite this, they were determined that his life would not be in vain and his kidneys were donated to an adult recipient, providing a lasting legacy in his name.

Ms Evans said Ty Hafan had been a great help to the family.

"Ty Hafan has been very supportive to us," she added. "Teddy also has his own special stone in Ty Hafan’s memorial garden.”

Mrs Carr said of her lottery prize: “I couldn’t believe it! I play the Lottery as a way to support Ty Hafan and never expected to win. It was a lovely surprise.”

Supporters can become a member of the Ty Hafan Crackerjackpot and support the charity which makes a huge difference to life-limited children, young people and their families from across Wales.
