UPDATE 3.45

A MAN and a woman were taken to hospital after their car crashed into a property shop in Holton Road, Barry this morning.

The man, in believed to be in his 80s, was reported to be uninjured, but witnesses reported that the woman passenger, also thought to be in her 80s, may have suffered a broken rib.

Emergency services attended the scene after receiving a call at 10.36am.
Witnesses said a nearby dentist surgery had brought oxygen and a defibrillator to the scene as the woman was seen to be having difficulty breathing.

Police cordoned off the road and the blue Ford B-Max Zetec was recovered from the scene around 11.30am.

Eyewitness Gavin Steacy, who had just walked past The Property Bureau, said the man in the driving seat had thought the brakes had failed.

Mr Steacy said: “They were so lucky because they were quite a few people in the street. He just lost control of the car.”

Malcolm Selly, 67, who owns The Property Bureau, said the shop had suffered substantial damage to its front and a settee, which had been positioned in front of the window, had been destroyed after it was shunted into the centre of the room as a result of the vehicle’s impact.

He and his son Leon had been at the back of the premises when the car crashed into its front window.

Leon, 42, said: “It sounded like a bomb – it was like and explosion.”

Malcolm Selly said no-one else had been inside the building at the time which was lucky as usually clients sit in the settee when waiting.

He said: “People were coming around and somebody called an ambulance.

They (firefighters) ripped the door off, but not the roof. Usually clients sit in the chairs and I’ve a couple of landlords who make themselves at home. So we were lucky.”

He added: “We’ve been here 10 years and nothing like this has ever happened. No-one was seriously injured and the building can be repaired.”

The building will be made safe and a structural engineer brought in to inspect the damage.

Police confirmed that the occupants had been taken to hospital and they were investigating the incident.
