RHOOSE homework club recently held its annual awards ceremony, with a 10-year-old local boy being named "Child of the Year".

The homework club, now renamed Solid Foundations, is run by volunteers and holds English and maths support sessions for local school children as well as helping older family members to further their skills with adult learning support.

As part of its community partnership with Solid Foundations, Tarmac's Aberthaw Cement Plant, supported the evening where 65 awards were presented.

A special award presentation for the Tarmac Child of the Year Award was made to 10-year-old Dylan James from Rhoose.

Dylan was presented with the award by Tarmac's Aberthaw Cement Plant Manager, Chris Bradbury who said: "This is the first year of our community partnership with Solid Foundations and we are delighted to be part of such a wonderful organisation that is growing from strength to strength in its work to help local children and their families.

"It was great to hear how well the children are doing and to present the Tarmac Child of the Year Award to Dylan. He won the award for his hard work in improving his maths and English, always asking for extra work and also always ready to help other children.

"He helps out with anything that needs doing at the club and always does it with a smile, very well deserved, Dylan."

Founding member of the homework club Cath Watkins said: "It's fantastic to see where the club has come to over the three years, we started supporting a handful of local children in Rhoose with specific learning difficulties and now we support over 90 children and adults across the Vale.

"Tonight's awards winners can be very proud of their achievements, it is a pleasure to help support such eager little learners and watch their confidence just grow in leaps and bounds. It makes all the effort worthwhile.

"I'd like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who put in many, many hours to make the club work and to Tarmac for helping support us."

Solid Foundations meets on Tuesday and Thursday during school term time at the Rhoose Community Centre.
