TWO teams of African children will be proudly donning Barry Town United colours for future games, after donated kits made an 8000 mile journey all the way to Lesotho.

Primary school teacher Roger Newberry, 65, has been travelling to Lesotho for 15 years, a trip he first made as part of a teaching exchange.

Before heading off earlier this month he asked his son Gareth, a committee member at Barry Town United FC, to inquire if the club would like to donate kits for children in Africa and the reply was a resounding "yes".

Packing two full home and away kits, Mr Newberry headed off and the yellow home kits made their way to children at a school in Maseru - where the PE teacher is Welshman David Hansen.

Mr Newberry said: "They were absolutely delighted. Maseru is not a rich school by any means, they have some equipment but kits are out of the question.

"They were beyond excited. They were just over the moon."

The green away kits found a home with a youth team in Thetsane West, and the response was equally heartwarming.

"They were beside themselves, they were so excited," Mr Newberry added. "They couldn't believe they had full kits with numbers and badges. They couldn't get over the fact that people 8000 miles away would be kind enough to share their kits with them.

"It was humbling to see their responses, it was just incredible.

"This is all down to the incredible generosity of Barry Town United, when I asked if they wanted to donate they didn't hesitate.

"The children hadn't heard of Barry Town United before but they're all fans for life now."

David Cole, club secretary at Barry Town United said: "We were more than happy to pass the kits onto Roger. And to see the smiles on the faces of those children has made it all worthwhile."
