BARRY ISLAND'S annual fireworks fiesta went off with a bang last week, with around 12,000 people attending despite the blustery weather.

The event was once again made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of the volunteers at the Rotary Club of Barry.

Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns, who attended the display, praised the organisers for setting a new benchmark for fireworks displays on the Island.

Rotary Club past president Peter Battle said: "We were really really happy with the attendance. I would estimate that between 10 and 12,000 people were there which is slightly down on last year but I suspect the weather may have put some people off.

"We were very pleased with the contributions from the public and the Barry Island traders al chipped in.

"It wouldn't be possible without the assistance of Barry Town Council and the Vale council."

The Rotary Club spend months planning the extravaganza, often beginning arrangements in July, and will be back again next year.

"Let's keep out fingers crossed for better wetahre next year," Peter added.

Vale MP Alun Cairns said: “It was a privilege to be able to attend the annual fireworks event on Barry Island. This year set a new benchmark with a fantastic display only made possible by the year round effort of volunteers.

“It takes a huge amount of effort to organise, and the shaking of buckets and other activities to fundraise is recognised and praised by the wider community.

"A fantastic effort that I believe sets the benchmark for fireworks displays.”
