THE decision to charge for parking on Barry Island this winter has been reversed by the Vale council.

In light of the council's recent decision to defer plans for town centre parking charges while they are re-appraised, parking charges on Barry Island will also be abandoned this winter season.

A Vale council spokesman said: "As a result of the decision by Cabinet on September 21 to defer the car parking charges report for further consideration there will be no charge for parking at Nells Point and Harbour Road car parks after September 30.

"The car parks will therefore be free to use during this winter season. The signs explaining the now deferred charges for parking at our coastal car parks have been removed."

Businessman Mark Vockins, owner of Quasar, said that although the initial decision had caused confusion and dismay among traders on the Island they were glad to see the free parking reinstated for the off-season.

"We all thought it was disgusting, charging for the winter," he said. "Businesses here already struggle to survive in the winter.

"I think there's been a lack of communication about the changes but I'm definitely happy that it's free again."
